I’ve been thinking a lot about breastfeeding lately.  The reason why, you ask?  Well, I’m still nursing my 13-month old and we’re down to 2 feedings a day.  Once the next one comes along, I’ll be back to every 3 hours again.  *sigh*  Don’t get me wrong–I absolutely love nursing my child, but when they’re teeny tiny, it’s a lot of work!

I had some trouble with my milk production about 2 months after my guy was born.  *Side note:  never take the NuvaRing while breastfeeding!  Any birth control that is estrogen-heavy actually decreases milk production.  Too bad my doctor didn’t tell me that!  It’s a good thing I did my research, though, and figured that out.

Anyway, I wanted to share some tips on how to increase your milk supply, if need be.  I loved reading the book, Spiritual Midwifery by Ina May Gaskin, and this is also where I found the answers I needed.  Find it on Amazon, but considered yourself warned–it’s a little 70’s, holistic, and the pics are wild.  Yeah, baby!  That’s my style!

  • Slow down–seriously, don’t try to clean and do laundry if the baby is napping.  You should nap, too.
  • Increase the number of feeding sessions (or pump in-between feedings).  Try to either pump or feed every 2 hours.
  • Eat a healthy, balanced, plant-based diet.
  • Increase your caloric intake by about 500 more calories.  If you don’t like to count calories, just see how much your husband eats and then eat more than him.
  • Drink at least 3 quarts of water each day.  This is no joke.  It’s a ton of water, but you’ll see a huge difference.  Coconut water was my savior, too–and a nice treat!
